🌟 National Recognition for Our Intergenerational Vision
We’re incredibly proud that our nursery in Stockport has received national praise for reimagining the early years’ experience by bringing different generations together in one inspiring learning space.
At Fernbees Day Nursery, located within Olea Care Group’s flagship Fernlea Care Home, we were honoured to receive the Changing Perceptions Award at London’s InCommon Age Friendly Awards. This award celebrates organisations that challenge age-related stereotypes and foster meaningful relationships across generations.
It’s a major milestone for us and for Fernlea, and reflects our shared vision for blending childcare and elder care in a unified, nurturing environment.

👶🧓 Our Intergenerational Community
Since opening our doors in 2022, we’ve built far more than a nursery—we’ve created a space where children connect with elderly care home residents through regular interactions. These moments spark genuine friendships and are at the heart of how we approach early years learning.
By combining a strong educational curriculum with intergenerational experiences, we help our children develop empathy, confidence, and emotional intelligence. They grow up learning compassion, respect, and a sense of belonging, shaped by everyday connections with older adults.
As for our Fernlea residents, the impact is just as profound—these shared experiences ease loneliness, boost wellbeing, and give them a powerful role in helping our little ones thrive.
💡 Driving Change With Passion
This groundbreaking work is championed by two of our passionate leaders: Alex Gowland at Fernbees and Beverly Cleto at Fernlea. As our designated Intergenerational Champions, they’ve tirelessly advanced this unique model, building relationships far and wide to gain insight and momentum.
Alex shared, “Intergenerational work has always been a passion of mine.
“Since leading on this, I’ve seen firsthand the transformative impact these relationships have on both the children and our residents.
“It’s incredibly rewarding to help nurture that connection.”

’Incredibly proud’
Louise Claffey, spokesperson for the Olea Care Group, added: “We are incredibly proud to have received this award.
“Fernbees began as a vision for a shared space where generations could come together and learn from one another. Today, it’s a thriving, joyful community.
“That success is down to the dedication of so many people who believed in the power of intergenerational practice.
“At Olea Care Group, we see our people as our greatest asset. By empowering staff to innovate and take ownership of their work, we’ve built a culture where new ideas are welcomed – and where those ideas can make a real difference to lives.”
