Doves Nest received Commend status as part of the Gold Standards Framework (GSF) in Care Homes Quality Hallmark Awards. They join more than 400 homes across the country which are providing their residents with the compassionate care they deserve as they approach the end of their lives.
GSF helps homes like Doves Nest provide the right care, at the right time in the right place – reducing inappropriate hospital admissions and increasing the chances of residents dying in their preferred place of care – the care home.
Maura, GSF Lead, said: “We are delighted to have been awarded this prestigious award. We have always prided ourselves on the excellent care we provide our residents. GSF has helped us formalise this and take our care to the next level, ensuring that residents enjoy their lives, receiving the high quality care they want in their chosen place, right up to the end.”
Those care homes that have received the GSF Quality Hallmark Award have demonstrated a real improvement in the quality of care they provide, halving the number of residents dying in hospital as well as halving crisis hospital admissions, leading to greater satisfaction for families, residents and staff.
To be accredited, the home had to show that it met strict criteria in 20 different areas, ranging from leadership and support to dignity and respect, as well as submit a portfolio of evidence.
Everyone in the home, ranging from nurses to the activities coordinator and catering staff, are involved in regular reviews with the residents. All aspects of their lives are considered including spiritual beliefs, personal interests and care preferences. Staff talk to the residents about their end of life care, giving them the opportunity to make decisions and say what they want. This has helped the residents and their families feel secure that they will be comfortable and their preferences considered at all times.
Maggie Stobbart-Rowlands, GSF National Centre Lead Nurse, said, “The last decade has witnessed a significant change in the way care homes, and nursing homes in particular, care for their residents as they approach the end of their lives and the GSF Centre is proud to have played a significant part in that transformation. Increasing numbers of people are now being cared for in a more compassionate and coordinated way which means they are receiving the care they want, where and when they want it.”
“Homes like Doves Nest are a beacon for others to follow as they are providing the right care, in the right place, at the right time, offering their residents the sort of care we would want for ourselves or our loved ones.”
The Quality Hallmark awards were presented by Alan Rosenbach, Policy Lead for Care Quality Commission (CQC) which recognises the achievements of GSF accredited care homes and refer to them as examples of best practice. He said: “At the CQC we place great value on the work of the GSF, which has undoubtedly helped to drive up standards of palliative care in care homes. The vital importance of this to people approaching the end of their life, and their families, can hardly be overstated.”
The National GSF Centre has delivered training to more than 2,500 homes across the UK and is accrediting up to 200 homes a year. This helps individuals and their families to identify homes delivering high quality care, a ‘gold standard’ of care for all their residents as they come to the last stage of their life.
